To much Water

12th Limestone, 57

Today we startet to dig a stairshaft down, after the loamy sand we found white sand. But our Miner mentioned he cant go any deeper, there is some black sand with aquifier. Recording to our reports, its exactly what we had to expect, there is at least one more layer of sandy aquifier.

13th Limestone, 57

The Trade Caravan arrives, and we made a few wooden cups for trading, i hope they want them. Also our cattle started to bred, we got some foals and puppies.

27th Limestone, 57

Our Architect, he called himself Ghoulsblade, showed me someideas how to break the aquifier, i am going to use them, also we made the deal he will lead the fort in the next year.

2nd Sandstone, 57

I finally traded our cups for some ropes, another pick and some meat and drinks.

18th Sandstone, 57

Some migratns have arrived, they will make a little military, as i we have not enough work yet, but i fear we will get some trouble sooner or later. We are now 16 dwarfs, out 7 from the expedtion, 1 migrant was a fisher i think we have use for him, 3 were peasants, they will be haulers and the other 5 are now recruits. Now i need to set up a barracks for them, not enough beds yet. One of the peasants get this third pick i traded before and should train for a little mining.

sometime in Timber, 57

Oh dear, i totally lost track of time now, this new project to cavein into the aquifer is really exhausting. We managed to wall off a little area, sadly the new peasant i give this pick got cought by some dust afterwards and dragged into the channel… he drowned.

28th Obsidian, 57

I miscalucated the blocksize for the cave in, but at least we are able to build a few staircases down, i hope there is a stone layer next!

1st Granite, 59

Just as the deal was, ghoulsblade will lead the fort now, and continue our efforts to break the aquifier.

The first half of a year

7th Limestone, 57

We are now in autnum, i established a little fortress into the nearby hill.

There is nothing special, sleeping rooms for everyone, a dinning room and a office for myself. Also a trade depot, a farm and some workshops. I helped out with the second pick to dig the rooms.

Vooood was a bit lazy until we established a kitchen for him, he just played with the kitten all day.  I think they are friends now.

But at best take a look at the map yourself:

A journey beginns.

24th Timber, 56

Dear Diary,

yes its me again, Rhenaya, i know i should have wrote to you more, but the last year was just to much. Well, you know, the ongoing war with the elves, the rumors about vile megabeasts, my economics study and the diplomatic journey to the humans. To be true, i just left you at home and forgott you, i hope your not mad at me now. With the end of the study i know now much about maintaining an outpost, i should look for work now.

26th Timber, 56

Hey Diary,

today was awesome, i met this guy in the tavern, i am not sure if he was just sober, or he really has this long spoken name. He called himself vooood, but more important he seems to look for some volunteers for an outpost. And the best part: i am hired! Yes i have a job, we will start our journey in the Winter, so we should be able to establish out works from spring on.

3th Moonstone, 56 The last week was a lot of work, we need supplies and more volunteers, but this will get so awesome, we are now four dwarfs, as much as i know this outpost shoud be about a military post behind the elven woods, so we can attack them from two sides.

9th Moonstone, 56 We finally got 5 other Workers ready, this should be enough to start the outpost, if we do well more imigrants will come, and more to start isnot nice. I think the elves and even goblins would attack in to large numbers, if we travel with more dwarves. Tomorow i am going to talk with some scouts and prospectors about the terrain behind the enemy lines.

Items

Dwarves

10th Moonstone, 56 What the hell? They said we will embark into an HAUNTED SWAMP! Are they insane? I mean we are behind our motherlands near the enemy and than a swamp is not enough, no even a haunted one should it be. At least the prospector starts to give a little hope: there should a magma pipe under the grounds too, even a brook, maybe in some years we can establish some kind of obsidian works. But here he also destroyed this hope again, there is a large aquifer underground, and he is not sure the pipe break through it. The scouts say in Opal the northern swamp pools freeze into clear ice, maybe we can break the aquifer there. Anyway, i should order some Stones tomorow, we will start our caravan in a week.

Embark Location

18th Moonstone, 56 We finally started our journey. Not much to say now.

28th Obsidian, 56 One more day, we will arrive exactly with spring into the new year, the travel was rather boring, i hoped to see some elves at least, since my study i hadn’t much sparring and fighting at all. Vooood was rather enthusiastic today, and finally come up with a name for our new home Shintig or “Brightdung”, i think he is sober again…

1st Granit, 57 We finally arrived!

Embark and Personalize

Hey,

like every Fortress you need materials,  tools and other supplies to build it. So i want to suggest, what our little caravan should take with it.

At first we got some points for stuff we take with us:

  • 2 Pickaxes
  • 1 Battle Axe
  • 1 Short Sword
  • 1 War Hammer
  • 20 of every booze (ale, beer, wine and rum)
  • 15 plump helmets
  • 5 of every seed
  • 20 stacks of meat and turtles
  • 1 cat (and only one!)
  • 2 horses (for a little breeding and future meat supply)
  • 2 dogs
  • 25 piles of wood
  • 40 piles of stone

As we see, we dont take to much with us, and things like an anvil could get imported after we struck some ore. Only one cat is most important: Cats hunt vermin, and so make our food stockpiles more secure, but two will start breeding like bunnies, and this could kill weaker computers and break fps down till unplayable.

Now we also got our 7 Dwarfes, i suggest we dont spent to much effort here and only 2 points every domain, just like real migrant dwarfs do.

  • the Miner (Mining, Stone Detailing)
  • the Woodworker (Carpenterer, Woodcutter and Bowyer)
  • the Mason (Mason, Building Designer, Carpenterer, Mechanic)
  • the Crafter (Wood, Bone and Stonecrafting, Clothsmaking, Leatherworking)
  • the Farmer (Herbalist and Farming, also Treshing, Milling, Weaving)
  • the Vooood (Cooking, Brewing, Butcher and Tanner)
  • the Rhenaya (*coughs* me of course… Appraiser, Bookkeeper, Liar, Negtoiater, Miner)

As we tend to start in some uglier Biome, we maybe want to add a few points in Military and take Weapons with us.

  • the Mine get some Wrestling, and fights with his pickaxe
  • the Woodworker get some axefighting skill, and fights with his axe
  • the Mason get some hammerfighting
  • the Cook get some swordfighting

Every player can take one Dwarf in his turn and name it, also give him a personal title. Other players are prohibted to use this dwarfs in dangerous tasks and should try to let them survive, just like they want with their own. For example: only the player himself can make his dwarf a (royal) guard or military.

So any Suggestions and other things are free to comment.

Shintig is a succession-style game of Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf Fortress is a game that reminds of Dungeon Keeper. The concept is simple – you start with 7 dwarves and embark to a location where you start building a fortress. As the fortress grows more dwarves flock in and the word is spread around. Soon other races are drawn to the fort and ambushes, attacks, or sieges can happen. A succession-style game is where several players take turns in managing the fortress.

How can I play?

To be able to play you have to join us on IRC (irc.quakenet.org, #dwarffortress) and contact me or other players. You will also have to join WordPress and provide us your e-mail adress used for registration so we can add you to this blog.

What are the rules?

Turns will be yearly from spring to spring. General missconduct will be sanctioned by removing the player from the game and reverting the game to the last save. General missconduct is, but is not limited to, destroying the fort on purpose. Each player has to write at least one article with details of what happened during his mandate over the fortress.

What has been done so far?

We have decided on a name so far (it was randomly generated) – Shinting – which means Brightdung on Dwarvish. We have also started this blog as the central place for all Shinting players and visitors.

When will the game start?

Soon™!… Maybe
